Saudi border guards foiled the trafficking of 16,650 tonnes of hashish, 1.36 millionamphetamine pills, 2,183 firearms, 789,368 rounds of ammunition and 63 explosives last year, local media reported.

The haul also included 685 tonnes of qat, leaves of an Arabian shrub which are chewed or infused in a drink as a stimulant.

Authorities also arrested 5,376 smugglers involved in these operations, 48,505 illegal immigrants, including 44,912 people attempting to infiltrate into the Kingdom and 3,593 people trying to leave the country illegally.

The border guards also rescued 776 people of different nationalities.
