Halloween was celebrated in Saudi Arabia with revelers in scary costumes flocking to the capital city of Riyadh to celebrate the festival.

As part of the ongoing Riyadh Season, the "Scary Weekend" took place on Thursday and Friday.

Dressed-up visitors were granted free entry to the event if they wore scary costumes on the Boulevard.

Saudis and residents displayed terrifying disguises and creative designs at the event. As people discovered the stories behind various character costumes, the goal was to create an atmosphere filled with fun, thrills and excitement.

Abdulrahman, one of the attendees, wore a costume of the mythological North American creature Wendigo. Legend says the folkloric creature is a malevolent spirit that possesses humans, feeds on their flesh, calls on greed and hunger, and cannibalizes them. Abdulrahman was celebrating Halloween for the first time in the country.

"It's a wonderful celebration, and there's a spirit of joy... I don't know if it's haram or halal. We celebrate it just for fun. Arab News quoted him as saying, "We don't believe in anything.".

In spite of the fact that Halloween is shunned across the Gulf, attendees at the event described it as harmless entertainment.

A participant at the event, Khaled Alharbi, said: "Actions are based on intentions.". The only reason I'm here is to have fun."

He came with his family, dressed as a bloodied doctor, nurse, and consultant. In time for the city's biggest costume party, they created a backstory behind their costumes. She carried a two-year-old family member dressed as a witch, who playedfully cast an insanity spell on them.

As a first-time Halloween celebration, this was also a first for the family.
