Mexico failed to advance out of its group for the first time since 1978 as Argentina defeated Poland 2-0 in a simultaneous match.
It had reached the round of 16 at each of the last seven World Cups, which was tied with Brazil for the longest current streak.
To advance in Group C, El Tri needed both a victory and help from Poland, which was playing across town against Argentina. Argentina's victory meant goal difference was crucial.
A goal by Martin in the 48th minute gave El Tri hope, and Luis Chavez's free kick four minutes later made the chances even better.
Despite Mexico's best efforts, they failed to score another goal in the final 20 minutes, including an attempt by Uriel Antuna that was ruled offside in the 87th minute.
