Saudi Arabia Seizes Over 11 Million Amphetamine Tablets At Jeddah Port
Category: Crime News

Details of the Drug Seizure

Saudi anti-drug police have thwarted an attempt to smuggle 11.9 million drug tablets of amphetamine at the Red Sea port of Jeddah. The haul had been hidden inside a container of gypsum board building materials. This successful operation was conducted by the General Directorate of Narcotics Control in coordination with the Zakat, Tax, and Customs Authority (ZATCA), as reported by the Saudi news agency SPA.

The Interior Ministry shared a video showing how the drugs were seized. However, no arrests were reported in connection with this operation.

Intensified Crackdown on Drug Smuggling

Saudi Arabia has ramped up its efforts to combat narcotics smuggling as part of its “war on drugs.” Recently, there have been multiple reports of thwarted smuggling attempts:

  • Last month, customs officers foiled an attempt to smuggle 2.4 million Captagon pills at Jeddah Port, the second such attempt in October.
  • Earlier, ZATCA uncovered 1.2 million Captagon pills hidden in a marble mixer at the Halat Ammar border crossing.
  • In September, nearly 55kg of cocaine was discovered hidden in a banana shipment at the King Abdullah port in the Rabigh governorate.

Broader Efforts in Saudi Arabia’s War on Drugs

Authorities have also dismantled smuggling and trafficking networks. Last month, a significant ring in Riyadh was uncovered, involving 21 individuals, including 16 government employees from various ministries such as the Interior, National Guard, and Justice.

These arrests underscore Saudi Arabia’s commitment to eliminating drug trafficking networks and safeguarding the nation.

The Role of ZATCA and Other Authorities

The Zakat, Tax, and Customs Authority (ZATCA) has played a critical role in detecting and preventing smuggling attempts. Advanced technology and enhanced intelligence-sharing have bolstered these efforts, ensuring greater security at Saudi Arabia’s borders and ports.

Public Awareness and the Path Ahead

In addition to enforcement, Saudi Arabia continues to raise public awareness about the dangers of drug trafficking. Collaborative efforts between government agencies and international partners highlight the kingdom’s dedication to regional security and safety.
