Saudi Arabian authorities have announced a ban on working under direct sunlight for all private sector establishments between 12 PM and 3 PM, effective from Saturday, June 15, 2024, until September 15, 2024.

The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development (MHRSD) and the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health (NCOSH) will jointly enforce this prohibition to ensure worker safety and uphold international occupational health standards.

This initiative aims to protect private sector workers from heat-related injuries and illnesses, fostering a safer and healthier work environment. Employers are urged to adjust working hours accordingly to enhance productivity while safeguarding employees.

Exemptions will apply in regions with lower temperatures. Local branches of the Human Resources Ministry will determine whether the ban is necessary in these areas.

Workers in oil and gas sectors and those involved in emergency maintenance are not subject to this ban.

Violations can be reported by calling the Ministry’s customer care number at 19911.

The ministry has also published the "Procedural Guide for Occupational Safety and Health to Prevent the Effects of Sun Exposure and Heat Stress," available online.

According to the National Center of Meteorology (NMC), this year’s summer in Saudi Arabia will start on June 1st. While tourist areas might see above-average rainfall, eastern and central regions are expected to experience rising temperatures. NMC spokesman Hussein Al-Qahtani noted that the Kingdom has already seen significant weather changes, including rain and sandstorms, as spring ends.
