The Jeddah community was shocked when a woman allegedly threw three of her daughters from the third floor of a building in Al-Marwa district in east Jeddah, killing two of them and sending the third to intensive care.
Police arrested the 30-year-old mother and sources did not rule out the possibility of the woman suffering from psychological problems.
Police received a phone call from a person who said a woman threw three children from the window of an apartment on the third floor of her building. Police rushed to the location and surrounded the area.
Saudi Red Crescent teams also arrived at the location and administered medical aid to the children, but they soon announced that two of them had died due to severe injuries sustained during the fall. The third child, an 8-year-old girl, is in critical condition.
Police were shocked when they learned that the woman was the biological mother of the three children. She will be later transferred to a special committee to determine her mental status.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the children's father was not in the apartment when the incident took place. The mother was sent to police custody for further investigations.
Neighbors were in disbelief because of the magnitude of the crime. Khaled Al-Harbi, a Saudi, said, "I saw the children on the ground in a pool of blood. This is something that I will never forget. This is beyond my imagination and I never thought a mother could do this.” Another Saudi neighbor, Muhammad Asiri, said, "My son came rushing to me saying there is heavy police presence outside the building. I went out and was shocked to see two children dead and the third one fighting for her life. We never noticed anything unusual with that family. What happened is something that we cannot explain.”
Dr. Nawwaf Al-Harthi, consultant psychiatrist, said it was most likely that the mother was suffering from psychological problems because a sane person could never commit this sort of crime even in extreme anger. "A mother will never do this. There are many possibilities. The mother could be suffering from extreme depression with an urge to commit suicide or she might have been suffering from schizophrenia," he said.
