The Saudi authorities have unveiled an ambitious plan to install 2.5 million hi-tech smart power metres over the coming years.

The Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) said that the digital devices will be fitted at residential, commercial and industrial buildings.

The first stage of the plan is expected to be launched within two months, according to Okaz.

Within five years, all current electricity meters will have been replaced by smart ones.

The scheme aims at optimising the distribution networks and enhancing the rate of accuracy to its highest level of monitoring power consumption across Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia is shifting its focus to modern technology to protect the electricity network systems from hacking as well as contributing to the ideal use of energy.
