Today (Tuesday) a year passes since the first event Saudi Arabia encountered on the ground in dealing with the Corona virus, when a special plane carrying 10 Saudi students who had been evacuated by the Saudi government from Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak in China, arrived in the Kingdom.
Before this event, and since the outbreak of the epidemic in China in December 2019. Saudi Arabia has been living under precautions, warnings and meetings of specialized committees seeking to study the crisis the world is facing, and how to get out of it with the least losses.
Today, Saudi Arabia is experiencing a similar situation, as it was at the same time last year, with fears of a second wave, but according to the experience, which made most of the population feel the danger of the virus, after a months-long lockdown, and more than 10 percent of the population were infected, in addition to More than 6 thousand deaths, in 11 months.
This year, the world witnessed transformations, as was the case in Saudi Arabia, which was building its expectations on the worst possible scenarios and how to confront them, which was noticed that helped reduce human and material losses.
The plane that evacuated the ten students had arrived on Sunday morning at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, and at that time, Asharq Al-Awsat was practicing its field coverage. Although wearing a muzzle was not a mandatory condition at the time, the Saudi Ministry of Health set a condition for entering the airport lounge by adhering to masks, gloves and medical clothing, despite preventing everyone from approaching the plane or mixing with arrivals, which reflects the prediction of the worst possible scenarios.
In front of that plane were medical teams, ambulances, and private cars, equipped to transport students to a center for isolation for two weeks (14 days). Where all laboratory tests were performed on them, and they did not show that they were infected with the virus. But a month after their arrival, specifically on March 2, 2020, Saudi Arabia registered the first case, and it was a citizen coming from Iran.
Since then, the Saudi population began listening to the news and waiting for the daily “Health” bulletins, to find out if other cases were recorded, until the infections began to increase to reach about 5 thousand injuries per day, in the middle of last year, until after that they decreased During the last two months, it reached rates below 200 injuries, and sometimes less than 100. This decline was not a reason for Saudi Arabia to open its borders and airports and allow citizens to travel. Rather, the date was postponed for additional weeks, to be next May, in order to ensure an improvement in the situation internally.
And it did not take long, in the last two weeks, Saudi Arabia began to record a remarkable increase in its infections, despite reaching about 450,000 doses of the vaccine given, which was reflected in warnings of not being complacent and causing a second wave of the virus. The Saudi Minister of Health, Dr. Tawfiq Al-Rabiah, confirmed that during the past few days they had observed a noticeable increase and a continuous increase in the number of HIV infections, indicating that one of the most important causes of these gatherings of all kinds. And he warned that the country would be in danger of the second wave if the rallies remained complacent and preventive measures were not applied.
Today, there is a Saudi experience in dealing with the virus that has not yet ended, which led to integration between the various parties, and that was what appeared within hours of the Minister of Health’s warning; As the regions’ emirates began to stress the need to adhere to precautionary measures and use electronic applications designed to deal with the pandemic, such as “Tawakolna”, “My Health”, “Spacing” and other applications designed by the Saudi Authority for Data and Artificial Intelligence (SADAA), to support government efforts.
