A proposal calling for the criminalisation of food wastage will be discussed in the Shura Council next week, according to Akhbaar24.

Former Shura Council member Ahmed Al Mefrah had submitted the draft law which aims at cutting down food wastage, clamping down on extravagant banquets, rationalising food consumption and saving resources.

Shura Council member Nasser bin Dawood has also submitted a proposal, urging a crackdown on “show off” banquets and dumping food in garbage bins.

Under the proposal, individuals, families and official authorities would face hefty fines in case of food wastage.

Saudi Arabia wastes food more than any other country in the world. Up to 427 tonnes and eight million meals valued at SR70 million are squandered daily across the kingdom.

According to a report published by Rome-based Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), 90 per cent of Saudi households throw leftover food daily.
