According to a Saudi lawyer, imitating the other sex on social media is punishable by up to five years in prison.
“We live in a country governed by Sharia [Islamic law]. Lawyer Ahmad Al Muhaimid agrees that the offence violates Sharia.
According to Saudi state television Al Ekhbariya, violating public morality is punishable by five years in prison and SR3 million fine under the kingdom's anti-cyber crime law.
Offenders are also named to be shamed.
In Saudi society, imitating the other sex has become a phenomenon, according to the lawyer.
It is an isolated case, which does not require a special penal code, he said.
Saudi authorities have made several arrests in recent years related to social media offences and propagation.
