Shoura Council's Health Affairs Committee Rejects Non-Saudi Ownership Of Clinics And Medical Complexes
Category: General

Shoura Council’s Health Affairs Committee rejected  a recommendation by the government to repeal paragraph (1) of Article 2 of the Private Health Institutions Law, which reads, “Ownership of private health institutions, excepting hospitals, will be for Saudis only.”  This law prohibited foreign businessmen investing in clinics and health complexes.

The committee justified its stance against foreign investment in clinics and other small health facilities arguing that the recommendation did not supply any information about the impact of the implementation of the recommendation on Saudi investors and doctors, neither did it give any information about the advantage of the move to the national the economy, or the country, Okaz reported.

The recommendation is also silent on the views of competent medical boards, such as the Saudi Health Council, the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties or the National Health Committee in the Saudi Council of Chambers of Commerce, the Shoura committee pointed out.
