Saudi Arabia To Expand Railway By 50%, Boost Airport Capacity To Become Global Logistics Hub
Category: Travel

Saudi Arabia has unveiled ambitious new goals to transform its transport and logistics sector, including expanding its national railway network by over 50% and doubling airport passenger capacity. These initiatives align with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 strategy to position itself as a leading global logistics hub.

Vision 2030 and National Transport Strategy

According to Saudi Akhbar24.com, Minister of Transport and Logistics Services, Saleh Al Jasser, announced the plans during a session titled “Shaping the Future of Transport: People, Technology, and Policy” at the Global Aviation and Maritime Transport Summit.

Al Jasser emphasized that the Kingdom is progressing steadily toward a fully integrated, technology-driven, people-centric transport ecosystem. Central to this transformation is the National Transport and Logistics Strategy, launched in mid-2021 to diversify the economy and reduce dependency on oil.

Expanding Rail and Airport Capacity

Among the highlights of the new strategy is a more than 50% expansion of the Saudi railway network. Additionally, the Kingdom plans to more than double its airport passenger handling capacity to accommodate the growing number of travelers and support trade growth.

Logistics Zones and Integrated Infrastructure

A key pillar of the strategy is the creation of specialized logistics zones that connect sea, air, and land transport systems with customs and digital operations.

One example is the integrated logistics zone at Jeddah Islamic Port, which will soon be linked to King Abdulaziz International Airport through the upcoming land bridge railway project. This connectivity is expected to streamline cargo movement, increase national coverage, and eliminate operational bottlenecks.

Digital Logistics Transformation

Al Jasser also highlighted the successful implementation of the unified national digital logistics platform, which connects customs, ports, airlines, and freight forwarders. The platform has already reduced customs clearance times by over 30%, significantly boosting operational efficiency.

Positioning Saudi Arabia as a Global Logistics Leader

These combined efforts reflect Saudi Arabia’s intent to establish itself as a global logistics powerhouse. With ongoing development in infrastructure, policy, and digital integration, the Kingdom is rapidly shaping the future of transport in the region.
