Saudi authorities have issued a set of directives to Muslim parents accompanied by their children while performing Umrah, the minor pilgrimage, in the Grand Mosque, Islam's holiest site in Mecca.
Enhancing Religious Sense and Safety During Umrah
The Saudi Ministry of Hajj emphasized that taking care of children during the Umrah rites not only ensures their safety but also enhances their religious sense and attachment to the two holy mosques in Mecca and Medina.
Key Guidelines for Parents During Umrah
Avoiding Peak Times and Crowded Areas
The ministry advised pilgrims escorting their children to avoid peak times and crowded places while performing the Umrah rituals. This helps in reducing stress and ensuring the safety of the children.
Use of Electronic Tracking Bracelets
Parents are also directed to ensure that their children wear electronic tracking bracelets, keep them close, and educate them on proper behavior inside the Grand Mosque.
Current Umrah Season and Upcoming Pilgrimage Plans
The current Umrah season, which can be performed year-round, commenced in late June following the annual Hajj pilgrimage that attracted around 1.8 million Muslims from across the globe.
According to Saudi figures, around 13.5 million Muslims performed Umrah last year. The kingdom aims to welcome 15 million Muslims for Umrah next year.
Recent Facilities Introduced by Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam, has introduced several facilities for Muslims wishing to perform Umrah. These include extending the Umrah visa from 30 to 90 days and allowing entry via all land, air, and sea outlets with the option to leave from any airport.
Additionally, women pilgrims are no longer required to be escorted by male guardians, and Muslims holding various types of entry visas, such as personal, visit, and tourism visas, can undertake Umrah and visit Al Rawda Al Sharifa at the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina after booking an e-appointment.
Saudi citizens can also apply to invite their friends abroad to visit the kingdom and undertake Umrah.
