Saudi Arabia Eases Iqama Renewal For Residents With Family Abroad
Category: Expats

Saudi Arabia's General Directorate of Passports (Jawazat) has introduced a new policy allowing residents to renew their Iqama (residency permit) even if one or more of their dependents or companions are currently outside the Kingdom. The key condition is that the head of the household must remain within Saudi Arabia during the renewal process.

Key Highlights of the New Iqama Renewal Policy

Head of Household Presence is Sufficient

The new rule removes the previous requirement that all family members be physically present in Saudi Arabia to renew residency. As long as the head of the household is in the Kingdom, the Iqama renewal process can proceed without interruption.

Electronic Exit and Re-Entry Visa Extensions

The General Directorate also clarified that families can now extend exit and re-entry visas for members outside the Kingdom entirely online. Using the Absher platform and the SADAD system, residents can manage visa extensions digitally, eliminating the need to visit passport offices in person.

Administrative and Humanitarian Relief

This update is seen as a major administrative relief for many expatriates, particularly those whose family members travel abroad for education, medical treatment, or family emergencies. It helps residents avoid legal risks and delays associated with expired residency permits.

Benefits to Expatriate Families

The change is expected to have a positive impact on the lives of thousands of expatriate families in the Kingdom. Families can now maintain legal status and continue accessing government and private sector services without disruption.
