Saudi Arabia Braces For Severe Thunderstorms And Flood Risks 2025

The National Centre for Meteorology (NCM) has forecast continued moderate to heavy thunderstorms accompanied by hail and strong winds across Jazan, Asir, Al Baha, and Mecca regions, raising concerns over flash floods.

Regions Facing Thunderstorm and Flood Risks

  • Moderate to heavy thunderstorms, hail, and strong winds expected in Jazan, Asir, Al Baha, and Mecca with high flash flood potential. (Civil Defense alerts)
  • Lighter to moderate rainfall forecast in Medina, Tabuk, Al Jouf, Northern Borders, and Najran.
  • Partly cloudy to overcast skies with chances of light thunderstorms and dust storms over Eastern Province, Riyadh, and Qassim.

Wind, Clouds, and Sea Conditions

  • Red Sea surface winds: northwest to west in the north, southwest to south in the central and southern parts, at 12–42 km/h, occasionally exceeding 50 km/h.
  • Thunderstorm clouds could raise wave heights from 0.5m to 2m, making sea conditions vary from slight to rough.
  • Arabian Gulf surface winds: southeast to south at 10–26 km/h, wave heights from 0.5m to 1m, generally calm conditions.
