High-level Pledging Event In Geneva To Support Humanitarian Response In Yemen
Category: General

The United Nations and the governments of Sweden and Switzerland will hold on Tuesday a high-level pledging event in Geneva to support humanitarian response in Yemen and alleviate the sufferings of the Yemeni people.

Saudi Arabia’s delegation to the event will be headed by Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, adviser at the Royal Court and supervisor general of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief).

The United Nations and its humanitarian partners in 2018 launched an international appeal for $2.96 billion to provide neutral and impartial life-saving assistance and protection to people in Yemen. The objective of the event is to raise awareness of the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian crisis in Yemen.

The event aims to mobilize urgent resources in support of the humanitarian response in Yemen, highlighting the inter-agency 2018 Yemen Humanitarian Response Plan (YHRP) as the most effective, efficient and strategic investment to provide life-saving humanitarian assistance and protection to 13.1 million people across the country.

Last Tuesday, Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman, deputy premier and minister of defense, and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres attended the signing of the joint executive program between the Kingdom and the United Nations represented by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs for supporting and financing the UN Humanitarian Response Plan in Yemen for 2018.

The agreement includes $1 billion contribution from the Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates, including $930 million to UN organizations and $70 million to rehabilitate ports and roads to increase the volume of relief items and commercial imports.

Guterres thanked Crown Prince Muhammad for the contribution, which covers nearly a third of the total the UN is seeking for Yemen humanitarian aid this year.
