Elon Musk Wants You To Reject WhatsApp And Use Signal, Here's Why
Category: Technology

People around the world have been pretty annoyed with WhatsApp lately, after it updated its Terms and Privacy Policy, forcing it to share user data with its parent company, the social media giant, Facebook.

This didn’t sit well with many individuals, including the world’s richest man, Elon Musk, who expressed his solution in just two words in a tweet. He simply said, “Use Signal”.

Elon hasn’t been a fan of Facebook since a while

It is not surprising that Elon Musk recommended people to go off a Facebook-owned app as we saw in 2018, as Elon Musk responded to Signal founder Brian Acton’s #deletefacebook as ‘What is Facebook’ and then later deleting Facebook accounts for his companies after being challenged by Twitter user @sedarsprofile.

Moreover, in March last year, Facebook’s AI head Jerome Pesenti publicly criticized Elon Musk’s understanding of AI, which truly pissed him off, and forced him to tweet ‘Facebook Sucks’ on Twitter.

So it was pretty evident that Musk isn’t a fan of Facebook or its way of doing business.

Overloading Signal servers

In fact, Musk's tweet persuaded so many people to try out the Signal messaging app that the app was just not ready to handle the load and many new users weren’t receiving their verification codes.

To this, Signal responded to its users on Twitter, “We are working with carriers to resolve this as quickly as possible. Hang in there.”

Why is Signal so good?

In case you didn’t know, Signal is an encrypted multi-platform texting app managed by the Signal Foundation, which has been formed by one of WhatsApp’s co-founder, Brian Acton. It is regarded as one of the most secure texting apps in terms of encryption among people communicating as well as data collection.

Other popular messaging apps like Telegram use the end-to-end encryption protocols devised by Signal, in fact.

Moreover, Signal is an independent 501c3 nonprofit and the brand promises no advertisements, no trackers.
