Saudi health authorities have said that the use of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine against COVID-19 will begin later this month, a local newspaper reported Friday.

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority Thursday announced registering the vaccine for import and use in the kingdom.

The vaccine will be first used for people over 65 years, health workers and those suffering from obesity, immunity deficiency and chronic diseases, Okaz quoted a health official as saying.

End of Q2

“The second targeted category in the second stage running from the end of the first quarter of 2021 until the end of Q2 will be those over 50 years ill with chronic diseases,” spokesman for health affairs in the city of Medina Moayad Abu Unq said.

All public and private sector employees in the country will have access to the Pfizer vaccine starting from Q3 while teachers will get it in July, according to the official.

The vaccine will be made available in sufficient doses for all citizens and expatriates for free in Q3 of next year, he added.
