A Saudi Man Is Arrested For Keeping Lions
Category: Crime News

A local newspaper reports that Saudi Arabia's environment police arrested a man who was keeping three endangered lions in violation of the law.

The Special Forces for Environment Security (SFES) in Riyadh have taken legal action against the man and referred him to public prosecution, according to news portal Ajel.

In addition, SFES has coordinated with the government's National Centre for Wildlife to care for the animals.

Saudi Arabia prohibits dealing with endangered animals, including keeping and displaying them. A violation may result in a prison term of up to 10 years and a fine of up to 30 million riyals, or both penalties.

Saudi authorities warned against the illegal rearing of predators last year after a lion mauled its keeper to death in Riyadh.

The illegal purchase of wild animals has thrived thanks to social media, where they are marketed.
