Traffic regulations amendments in Saudi Arabia threaten motorists who cause serious traffic accidents resulting in death or total impairment with jail time and/or fines of SR200,000.

As reported by Al Ekhbariya, TV Saleh Al Ghamdi, Member of the Traffic Safety Committee, motorists who cause injuries in traffic accidents resulting in hospitalization for a maximum 15 days will be imprisoned for at least two years and/or fined SR100,000.

According to the amended regulations, there are eight types of violations. For leaving a vehicle with the engine running, not having insurance, crossing roads in areas not designated for pedestrians, and not giving pedestrians priority at pedestrian crossings, fines will be imposed of SR100 to SR150.

Jumping traffic signals, overtaking pupils disembarking or boarding school buses, or driving in the opposite direction will result in fines ranging from SR3,000 to SR6,000. A fine of SR300 to SR500 will be imposed for throwing litter from cars, not concentrating on driving, holding an expired licence, or not using a child seat.
