Saudi Arabia And Iraq Re-Open Border Closed Following Invasion Of Kuwait

Saudi Arabia and Iraq seal the end of their long estrangement with the official opening of the border crossing at Arar for trade. The two countries cut ties and the border was closed in 1990 following Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait.
Reuters noted in 2017 that Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are both wooing their northern neighbor in an effort to halt the growing regional influence of arch-foe Iran.
The rapprochement began in 2015 when Saudi Arabia reopened its embassy in Baghdad. The Kingdom and Iraq had been in discussions about opening border crossing for several years. A joint trade commission is part of the new arrangement.
The Saudi town of Arar is 70 km from the Iraqi border.
