Joseph Athirumkal, a well-known Indian writer based in Riyadh, was feted during the launch of his latest collection of short stories at the recently concluded Sharjah International Book Fair.
Binoy Viswam, a member of Indian parliament, released the book titled “Papikalude Pattanam” (The Town of Sinners) by giving a copy to Mathew Kutty. Several writers, intellectuals and community leaders felicitated the author and they included Prof. T.P. Kunjikkannan, Dr. P.K. Poker, Shibu Kilithattil and Ramesh Perumbilavu.

The speakers noted that the stories in the book, published by Chintha Publishers, Thiruvananthapuram, underscore the need for developing a refined character and emphatic feelings toward the fellow beings around at a time when human beings are being led more by selfishness and vested interests. The stories also evoke the hapless condition of the marginalized section of society, they pointed out.

Members of the Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishad, Mass Sharjah and Akshrakkuttam were present on the occasion. Writer E.K. Dineshan introduced the book in the function in which Anil Ambatt welcomed the gathering and Sriprakash proposed the vote of thanks. Athirumkal authored a number of other books, including collections of short stories such as Pratheekshakalude Perumazhayil; Puliyum Penkuttiyum and Enayanthram.
