North Korean Mom Faces Jail By Rescuing Her Kids From House Fire While Leaving Kim's Portrait To Burn
Category: International

North Korea's strange priorities could mean prison time for a mother of two. She reportedly saved her two children from a house fire and not the portraits of the Kim family.

The woman is under investigation by the country's Ministry of State Security.

A fire broke out in a home shared by two families in Onsong County, North Hamgyong Province, near the Chinese border. While the parents were out at the time, they rushed back to save their family members after learning about the fire. In the process, one set of portraits was destroyed, reports Daily Mail.

North Korea asks its residents to display paintings of its past leaders, Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il, and even sends inspectors to make sure that’s done.

The Hermit Kingdom's laws demand that all the portraits of Kim’s family be treated as living humans which means that the failure to take care of the portraits is considered a crime.

If the mother is found guilty she might have to serve a lengthy prison sentence with hard labour. Because of the ongoing investigation, she cannot tend to her children who are admitted to a hospital.

On the other hand, residents of North Korea who manage to rescue Kim portraits from floods and fires are hailed as heroes – especially if they die in the attempt.
