The student at the College of Computer Science at King Khalid University, Nada Saeed Al-Qahtani, created a “robot” called “Eve” to support the curriculum for children with Down syndrome between the ages of 3 and 15 years.
The President of the University thanked Professor Dr. Falih bin Raja Allah Al-Salami, the student and the supervisor of her project, indicating that the student presented a distinguished model in scientific research and innovation, stressing the university’s keenness to support all works and constructive and important ideas that can be part of the solutions and contribute to the development and achievement of the 2030 vision. .
In detail, the student Nada Al-Qahtani explained that the idea of the project was launched in the light of the diversity of students’ levels in the classes and the difference in their abilities, which is the need for methods of teaching that take into account individual differences, as a result of which is the importance of learning with the help of a robot, which provides special benefits for children who have difficulties in learning in general Children with Down syndrome in particular, by providing visual presentation, self-learning, graphics, stimulating sounds, immediate responses, the ability to manage their own learning and socialize with students in a manner similar to the interaction of teachers with their students.
The robot relies on an intelligent system using artificial intelligence techniques for the ability to recognize students as well as the ability to distinguish sounds so that the robot can respond and give correct reactions, and the robot system consists of five basic units which are teaching calculations, numbers, reading, listening and solving puzzles as they are presented depending on The knowledge level of each student.
A smartphone app connected to the Android system has been created to add the child’s information by the parents to facilitate the identification of the child by the robot, as well as to enable the parents to follow the child’s level of progress by sending the results of the tasks that have been completed.
“The project aims to use a robot to help children with Down syndrome build and develop emotional intelligence skills, their cognitive skills and behavior skills through interactive activities and solve puzzles, and aims to develop all of these skills. This robot also provides a unique opportunity for children with Down syndrome to participate in learning, playing and communicating And making friends. “
Al-Qahtani revealed that she designed the robot that consists of the structure of the robot and its engines, an interactive screen, a sound and image discrimination, and an application to track the performance of each student, confirming that all student interactions are raised to a special platform automatically.
On the method of working on the robot, she stressed that it was printed entirely using the 3D printer, installing all its parts and building smart systems using a number of specialized technologies according to the task, expressing her thanks to the project supervisor, the Artificial Intelligence Center, the college, and the university administration for its role in building their cognitive and skill capabilities.
For his part, the Director of the Artificial Intelligence Center at the university and the student’s supervisor, Dr. Salem bin Fayez Al-Olayani, explained that artificial intelligence aims to solve many problems facing the world today, social, educational, industrial, medical, and others, by enabling the machine to work with high cognitive capabilities that match human capabilities.
Al-Olayani added, “One of the biggest educational challenges today is to teach the category of people with special needs in ways that help them to increase educational integration and assimilation and develop communication and communication skills and monitor all their interactions in the education environment in an innovative way. Hence the project idea came, where the student Nada Al-Qahtani worked with the design The implementation is complete, and it showed distinct technical and personal skills ..
