Saudi Arabia will adopt a new traffic system based on deducting points for driving violations following its approval by the Ministry of Interior.
According to the executive regulations published by Um Al-Qura official newspaper on Jan. 3, rules to be implemented within six months stipulate the loss of a driving license if a total of 90 points is registered against the driver within three years of their first offense.
Special courts will handle cases resulting from traffic violations and appeals to rule out court decisions.
New regulations set a number of points for each violation depending on severity. Points will be placed on the driver’s record and the license revoked if 90 points are accumulated within three years of the first violation.
A violation that puts public safety at risk for the second time within a year will be penalized with the maximum number of points. If the same violation is repeated within a year, the driver will face court and a possible jail term or doubled fine.
Public safety violations include speeding, drink driving, ignoring road signs and dangerous overtaking.
