Road Crash In Taif Leaves Six Dead In Saudi Arabia

On Sunday, six people were killed and another injured in a road crash in Saudi Arabia's western city of Taif.

According to news portal Ajel, the accident involved a car collision on a road linking Taif and Al Bahah.

A competent agency is handling the accident, the report said without providing any further details. It was not immediately clear what caused the collision.

Several deadly accidents have been reported in Saudi media in recent weeks.

The Saudi news portal Sabq reported that two cars collided head-on in Al Qunfudah on Saturday, killing four people and injuring two others.

Asir region in south-western Saudi Arabia, 21 Umrah pilgrims headed to Makkah were killed and 29 injured when their bus flipped over last week.

Earlier in March, a married couple and their four children were killed in a road crash returning from the capital Riyadh to Jizan in south-western Saudi Arabia.

A Saudi cleric, his wife and their five children died in a road accident near Al Qunfudah in January. On a highway, a speeding truck collided with a car carrying the seven, killing them all, witnesses said.

Saudi newspaper Al Watan reported last week that traffic accidents cost Saudi Arabia SR11.7 billion.

Approximately 9,420 accidents occurred in the kingdom's cities last year, compared to 7,542 outside, according to Al Watan. There were 4,555 deaths as a result of these accidents.

To reduce traffic accidents, Saudi authorities have toughened penalties against traffic violations.
