Saudi Arabia's Oversight and Anti-Corruption Authority (Nazaha) has detained multiple individuals following the collapse of a residential building in Jeddah, which resulted in seven deaths and eight injuries. The collapse has been linked to corrupt practices in the issuance of building permits.

On May 30, 2024, a residential building in Jeddah's Al-Faisaliyah neighborhood collapsed, leading to tragic casualties. Nazaha launched an investigation after detecting signs of corruption in the building permit process. The investigation was carried out in coordination with a committee formed by the Emir of Makkah Region.

The investigation uncovered technical defects in the building. Despite municipal orders to halt construction, the building owner, Firas Hani Al Turki, Deputy Minister for Shared Services at the Ministry of Culture, did not comply.

Firas's legal representative, Fahad Hussein Ali Sanba, also employed at the Ministry, collaborated with an engineering consultancy office owned by Majed Mohammed Jameel Bushnaq, via a Yemeni intermediary contractor, Mohammed Salim Ahmed Al Hussaissi. They sought a permit to add two floors and an upper annex.

An employee of the engineering office falsified a demolition permit and then a building permit using doctored photos, for which they were paid SR50,000.

The building owner admitted to bribing officials to secure the permit illegally. All involved parties have been detained, and legal proceedings are ongoing. Nazaha has reiterated its commitment to enforcing anti-corruption laws with zero tolerance.
