ACWA Power announced today it has connected to the grid the 300-MW Sakaka solar photovoltaic (PV) plant in Saudi Arabia with the expectation that the facility will achieve full commercial operation by the end of the year.
A consortium led by the Saudi company won this project — the first utility-scale renewable energy plant in the Kingdom — in January 2018 at a tariff of SAR 0.08781 (USD 0.0234/EUR 0.0213) per kWh. The total investment in it is estimated at SAR 1.2 billion.
Once fully commissioned, the Sakaka plant will be able to generate enough power a year to meet the annual consumption of about 45,000 homes.
Construction work on the project was initiated a year ago and the process involved 100% local employment, ACWA Power said.
