Saudi Arabia has unveiled a remarkable archaeological find, shedding light on the intricate 1,200-year-old architectural patterns of the historic Othman bin Affan Mosque.

This discovery marks the inaugural phase of the Archaeology Project in Historic Jeddah, an endeavor aimed at unraveling the rich history and cultural heritage of the region.

Conducted under the auspices of the Jeddah Historic District Programme (JHDP), extensive studies have provided invaluable insights into the mosque's evolution, showcasing traditional architectural features such as the characteristic open courtyard and covered prayer hall synonymous with Jeddah's historical constructions.

Despite undergoing several restorations over the centuries, the mosque's structural integrity has been preserved, with the current edifice dating back to the 14th century AH (20th century AD), retaining its original mihrab and spatial layout for over a millennium.

Excavations have yielded a treasure trove of artifacts, offering a glimpse into the enduring legacy of the mosque and the diverse construction phases it has witnessed. Among the notable findings are remnants of clay tiles, plaster, and traditional flooring materials used in the mosque's construction.

A particularly significant discovery includes ancient water tanks unearthed beneath the mosque, dating back approximately 800 years. These findings underscore the innovative water management solutions devised by the inhabitants of historic Jeddah to combat water scarcity.

Furthermore, the site has yielded a plethora of archaeological materials, including fragments of Chinese porcelain and celadon vessels dating back several centuries. These artifacts provide invaluable insights into the historical trade routes and cultural exchanges that have shaped the region over the centuries.
