Saudi Arabia’s Food and Drug Authority has warned of a skin care product named ‘Health & Beauty Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay’ because it contains a high percentage of bacteria and arsenic, local media reported.
The authority stated that it analyzed samples of beauty products for skin care sold on the local markets to ensure their safety, and results showed the product contained chemicals that exceeded the maximum permissible limit.
“Exposure to high levels of bacteria and arsenic may cause health risks to the consumer,” The Saudi FDA said.
The authority indicated that bacteria are present in beauty products for several reasons, including failure to follow standards during the product manufacturing and packaging stages, or because the product is stored in inappropriate conditions and environment.
“The contamination of cosmetic products with bacteria is not permissible unless it is from the type of harmless bacteria and in a percentage not exceeding the permissible limit, as exposure to high levels of bacteria may pose health risks to the consumer,” the Saudi FDA said.
It added that exposure for long periods of time to the arsenic leads to its accumulation in the skin, hair and nails, which can lead to inflammation of the skin, hyperpigmentation and loss of appetite, as well as more serious symptoms, which increase with longer exposure periods.
It advised consumers not to use the product and get rid of it, stressing the importance of purchasing products from reliable sources.
The Saudi FDA pointed out that it was taking the necessary measures in coordination with the competent authorities to follow up the withdrawal of the product from the market, preventing its entry, and taking legal measures against violators.
