Saudi Arabia has warned Yemen’s Houthis after its air defenses intercepted and destroyed a drone south of Mecca, with the Saudi-led coalition declaring the security of the holy city, the Two Holy Mosques and pilgrims a “red line.” The Houthis have denied that they targeted Mecca.

Saudi Air Defenses Intercept Houthi Drone Near Mecca

The Saudi-led coalition said the Royal Saudi Air Defense Forces intercepted and destroyed a hostile drone south of Mecca on Tuesday evening, September 15, before it entered the restricted airspace over the holy city.

Coalition spokesman Major General Turki Al-Maliki said the incident represented the second reported attempt by the Houthis to target Mecca, referring to a previous ballistic missile incident in July 2017.

Mecca is Islam’s holiest city and attracts millions of Muslims for Hajj and Umrah each year. The incident has therefore raised particular concern because of the proximity of the reported drone interception to the holy city.

Saudi Arabia Calls Security of Holy Sites a ‘Red Line’

Al-Maliki said the security of the Two Holy Mosques and pilgrims is a “red line” and warned that coalition forces would take necessary measures to deter further attacks.

The warning comes amid a wider escalation in fighting between Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces and the Houthis, with attacks and military operations increasing across Yemen and Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia has previously faced missile and drone attacks attributed to the Houthis. 

Houthis Deny Targeting Mecca

The Houthis rejected Saudi Arabia’s allegation that the drone was intended to target Mecca.

Houthi political bureau member Hazem Al-Assad described the Saudi claim as false and denied that the group had targeted the holy city or Islamic holy sites.

The competing claims could not be independently verified. Saudi authorities said the drone was intercepted before entering Mecca’s prohibited airspace, while the Houthis rejected the allegation.

OIC Condemns Reported Attack

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), which represents 57 Muslim countries, condemned what it described as an attack targeting the holy city and expressed support for the protection of the Two Holy Mosques and pilgrims.

The latest incident has renewed attention on previous Houthi missile and drone attacks near Saudi Arabia’s holy sites. 

Saudi Arabia Faces Wider Houthi Missile and Drone Attacks

The reported Mecca drone interception came after a series of attacks launched from Yemen toward Saudi Arabia.

Saudi authorities said recent ballistic missile and drone attacks affected areas in the Kingdom’s south, with 13 civilians reported injured in Khamis Mushait, Abha and Taif. Several homes and vehicles were also damaged.

Saudi air defenses have faced similar threats in previous years, including drone attacks targeting southern cities and airports. In one earlier incident, Saudi defenses intercepted drones targeting Abha Airport and Najran.

Conflict Expands Around Red Sea and Bab Al-Mandab

The latest escalation is also linked to growing tensions around the Red Sea and Bab Al-Mandab Strait, a strategically important maritime route connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden.

The Houthis have expanded their presence along parts of Yemen’s Red Sea coast, raising concerns over commercial shipping and Saudi oil exports as disruptions continue to affect other major regional shipping routes.

Saudi Arabia has previously suspended oil shipments through Bab Al-Mandab following Houthi attacks on Saudi oil tankers. The strait remains an important route for international maritime trade.
