In a move towards inclusivity, Saudi Arabia's Transport General Authority has announced a groundbreaking update allowing passengers to bring their small pets on public transport. However, these furry companions must be secured in designated boxes to ensure safety. Alongside this pet-friendly policy, the kingdom has introduced fines of up to SR500 for 55 violations, outlined in a comprehensive mechanism detailing the rights and obligations of public transport users.
1. Pet-Friendly Travel: Small pets are now welcome on buses, trains, metro, and ships, provided they are safely contained in designated boxes.
2. Fines for Violations: The regulations introduce fines for various violations, including carrying items emitting unpleasant odors, fare evasion, and failure to follow instructions from the Transport Authority and carriers.
3. Rights of Passengers with Disabilities: Special emphasis is placed on the rights of passengers with disabilities or limited mobility. They are entitled to services, exemptions, or reduced ticket prices, and the carrier must provide assistance for boarding or disembarking.
4. Reserved Seating for Disabilities: Carriers must allow the reservation of two adjacent seats—one for the passenger with a disability or reduced mobility and another for their accompanying person.
5. Information Accessibility: Passengers should receive clear information about their rights, complaint procedures, and responsible authorities, with a focus on accessibility for people with disabilities and limited mobility.
6. Service Animals: Passengers with visual impairments can bring approved service animals on board, provided they do not pose a danger. Carriers must offer alternative services if the animal is refused.
7. Emergency Situations: The regulations address passenger deaths or medical emergencies during journeys. Carriers must request assistance, support emergency services, take on-board rescue measures, and safeguard the passenger's belongings until they can be delivered to their family or authorities.
