An arrest warrant has been issued by the Supreme Judicial Council of Iraq against Salwan Momika, an Iraqi man who recently burned a copy of the Holy Qur'an in Stockholm, Sweden. This incident has sparked international attention and raised concerns about the punishment for such acts.
The Supreme Judicial Council of Iraq has taken decisive action by issuing an arrest warrant against Salwan Momika, the individual responsible for burning a copy of the Holy Qur'an in the Swedish capital. This act of desecration occurred in front of Stockholm's largest mosque on the first day of Eid al-Adha, leaving the Muslim community deeply offended and outraged.
In response to the incident, the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs has called upon the Swedish authorities to hand over the accused to the Iraqi government for trial in accordance with Iraqi law. Ahmed Al-Sahhaf, a spokesperson for the ministry, emphasized that since the offender is an Iraqi citizen, he should be subject to Iraqi jurisdiction to face appropriate legal consequences.
To ensure the arrest and prosecution of Salwan Momika, the Iraqi authorities have shared an information bulletin and the arrest warrant with the Arab and International Police Directorate. These documents will facilitate the tracking and apprehension of the accused outside of Iraq, in compliance with Article (1)/372) of the Iraqi Penal Code.
The memorandum issued by the Supreme Judicial Council of Iraq also urges the relevant authorities to notify the Iraqi judiciary in case the accused is apprehended. This prompt notification will allow for the initiation of legal proceedings against Salwan Momika and ensure justice is served.
The burning of the Holy Qur'an by an Iraqi individual in Sweden has not gone unnoticed. The Iraqi judiciary has taken swift action by issuing an arrest warrant against the offender and calling for his extradition to Iraq. This incident serves as a reminder of the need for respect and tolerance among individuals, regardless of their beliefs, and highlights the importance of upholding religious sanctities.
