Consumers were urged to look for alternative dairy products whose prices have not been increased.

“There is a wide range of options and the prices of a brand of dairy products go up then look for other alternatives”, said the Saudi Consumer Protection Society.

It posted the advisory on its Twitter account, in the wake of the decision of Saudi Arabia’s largest dairy company Almarai to increase the prices of its products by five per cent to nine per cent, reported Al Marsd.

The firm blamed the price rise on the rising costs of production.

The announcement sparked an outrage among consumers and pushed social media users to launch a hashtag, calling on the public to boycott its products.

Meanwhile, business analystt Ahmed Al-Shehri advised people to simply slash their consumption of dairy production by 50% over the coming four months.

“This act will put the onus on dairy-producing companies and force them to reinstate the previous range of prices”, he said

“Companies have the right to set prices for their products and consumers have also the legitimate right to reject any price rise”, he said on his Twitter account, urging consumers to look for other alternatives and get rid of unnecessary goods.
