An Arab celebrity, living and working in Saudi Arabia, boasted on a live talk show that she worked as a cosmetologist without licence in a major Jeddah clinic, local media reported.
The Saudi Ministry of Health investigated the celebrity’s claims and found that she had offered cosmetic and beauty treatment without licence six years ago.
In a statement, the ministry confirmed that penalties would be applied to anyone proven to have violated the system of practicing health professions..
Offenders face jail time and fines, the ministry said.
It warned unlicensed health practitioners would be referred to the Bureau of Investigation and Public Prosecution (BIPP) for legal action.
The ministry said violations include practicing without a license, providing false information, false advertising, owning health profession tools without license or reason, or being involved in trafficking human organs.
The move, the ministry said, is meant to curb irregular practices, which endanger patient safety when unlicensed practitioners (doctors, specialists, nurses) perform surgeries or other medical procedures without adherence to the governing measures.
The measure also includes examinations and training that qualify the practitioner to get the license.
The ministry confirmed to all health practitioners in the private and public sectors the importance of applying the standards of patient safety, commitment to regulatory licenses, qualification from the Saudi Council of Health Specialities (SCHS), adherence to patients’ health and achieving their safety, making it the focus of their interest, and a commitment to professional ethics and the Health Profession Practice Law.
The ministry called upon everyone to report any violations by calling the toll-free telephone number 937.
