The Saudi Public Prosecutor has ordered the arrest of three Saudi men in connection with the shooting of a firearm into the air at the King Abdulaziz Camel Festival, an official source in the Public Prosecution said.

“One of the trio intercepted a participating camel in front of the external gates of the festival, fired into the air from his vehicle and fled,” the source added.

The Riyadh police have arrested the main suspect, identified as Abdullah bin Badah Rajeh Al Braik, and the other men, Hilal bin Ayed bin Daghathir Al Shaibani, and Abdullah bin Ayed bin Daghaither Al Shaibani.

The source said that the Public Prosecution will spare no effort in arresting those who violate the public order, applying the legal procedures against them firmly, and demanding the maximum penalties prescribed by the law against them, in a way that repels them and deters others.

The King Abdulaziz Camel Festival, a major cultural event in Saudi Arabia, began on December 1 upon directives of Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman.

The festival, held in the district of Southern Sayahdah south east of the capital Riyadh, draws over 1,800 participants annually including camel owners and fans from around the world.

Camels are a popular animal closely linked to heritage in the country.

The animal has long been dubbed as the “ship of the desert”, being the lifeline for desert dwellers.
