According to local media, a Saudi woman who refused antibiotics without a prescription shot dead Egyptian pharmacist Ahmad Hatem Madi.
Following the shooting, the unnamed assailant was arrested. It is illegal in Saudi Arabia to dispense medicine without a prescription, including antibiotics.
According to reports, the killer entered the pharmacy and asked for medicine. Three times she shot him when he refused and turned his back on her.
There is a young son, a wife, and a father battling cancer, whose treatment costs Madi had been shouldering.
According to a Facebook statement released by the Ministry of Emigration, Ambassador Nabila Akram extended her condolences to the deceased's family and confirmed that measures were taken to repatriate his body.
The victim's wife said she travelled with him to Saudi Arabia last year, but returned to Egypt 20 days ago as he promised to spend Eid Al Adha in Egypt.
"At the appointed time, the sponsor told him there will be no going back [to Egypt] because there is no one to cover for him [at work]." She added during a live broadcast on Al Masry Al Youm that the sponsor had promised to grant permission to her husband to return to Egypt for Eid Al Adha, but he kept procrastinating. In order to see his sick father, Ahmed begged him to travel.”
The sponsor refused to let Ahmad return to Egypt before Eid, so her husband notified him that he would resign and send him a notice explaining that his contract was already expiring on August 27.
According to her, Ahmad has been in Saudi Arabia for a year and three months, working 14 hours a day to provide for his family.
She claimed he never took a day off, even on Fridays.
