The Saudi Supreme Court has officially called on Muslims across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to observe the Ramadan crescent moon on the evening of Tuesday, 17 February 2026.
According to the Umm Al-Qura calendar, this date corresponds to 29 Shaaban 1447 AH, the final day of the Islamic month of Shaaban.
Official Statement from the Supreme Court
In its formal announcement, the Supreme Court began by praising Allah (SWT) and sending blessings upon Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), his family, and his companions.
The court referenced its earlier ruling, Supreme Court Resolution No. (203/AH), dated 29 Rajab 1447 AH, which confirmed that 1 Shaaban 1447 AH (20 January 2026) marked the beginning of the month of Shaaban.
Based on that ruling, the court has now urged Muslims throughout the Kingdom to sight the crescent moon that signals the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan.
How to Report a Ramadan Moon Sighting
The Supreme Court requested that anyone who observes the crescent moon — whether:
- With the naked eye, or
- Using binoculars or optical devices
should immediately report the sighting to the nearest court and officially record their testimony. Individuals may also contact the nearest administrative center for assistance in reaching a court.
Call for Public Participation
The court encouraged qualified observers and moon sighting committees across Saudi Arabia to actively participate in verifying the start of Ramadan 2026.
According to the statement, participating in the Ramadan moon sighting process brings religious reward and serves the wider Muslim community by promoting cooperation in righteousness and public service.
The announcement emphasized the importance of community involvement to ensure the accurate confirmation of the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan.
