New Traffic Law Amendment in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia has officially amended its traffic law to classify driving with an expired vehicle registration as a major offence. The update was published in the government gazette Umm Al Qura and aims to improve road safety while modernizing the traffic regulatory framework.

Key Changes Under the New Law

  • The Saudi Cabinet has approved amendments to the Traffic Law.
  • A royal decree (No. M/140) was issued, officially enacting the changes.
  • Article 71 of the Traffic Law has been repealed.
  • Driving a vehicle with an expired licence is now classified as an offence under the second schedule of violations.
  • The Ministry of Interior is required to update executive regulations to align with these amendments.

Government’s Commitment to Road Safety

The decision to amend the law follows consultations with the Shura Council and recommendations from the Economic and Development Affairs Council. These changes underscore Saudi Arabia’s commitment to:

  • Enhancing traffic discipline and ensuring adherence to laws.
  • Improving road safety and reducing accidents.
  • Encouraging motorists to keep their vehicle documentation up to date.

Penalties and Compliance

Authorities have urged all vehicle owners to renew their vehicle registrations to avoid penalties. While specific fines and enforcement measures are expected to be detailed in the updated regulations, driving with an expired registration could now result in severe penalties.

Motorists should ensure their vehicle registration is valid and renew it on time to comply with the new traffic laws.
