The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development in Saudi Arabia has announced the conclusion of the three-month midday outdoor work ban on Sunday, Sept. 15. This ban was part of a coordinated effort with the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health.
End of the Midday Work Ban
The ban, which began on June 15, 2024, prohibited outdoor work under direct sunlight from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm. The objective was to safeguard the health and safety of workers in private sector companies and establishments during the hottest part of the day. This decision reflected the ministry's commitment to occupational safety and health standards.
Implementation Period of the Work Ban
According to ministry sources, the compliance rate of private sector establishments reached 94.6 percent. Employers were required to adjust working hours to reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses and injuries. Non-compliance with this ban could have led to penalties for violating the safety regulations.
Awareness Campaigns and Guidelines
Throughout the ban period, the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health led public awareness campaigns highlighting the significance of adhering to the regulations. In addition, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development released a Procedural Guide on its website to help employers implement measures to protect workers from sun exposure and heat exhaustion.
