The Saudi health authorities have urged all Muslims wishing to perform the Umrah or minor pilgrimage during the upcoming holy month of Ramadan to get the meningitis vaccine at least 10 days before travelling to Mecca.
Health Advisory for Umrah Pilgrims
The Saudi Ministry of Health stated that this preventive measure aims to enhance pilgrims’ immunity against infections that may be transmitted in crowded places.
The ministry added that the vaccine provides protection for five years, thereby bolstering personal and collective protection, and helping maintain public health during the Umrah season.
People who received the vaccine in the past five years do not need to be revaccinated, according to the ministry.
Additional Preventive Measures
Authorities advised worshippers to follow other preventive measures such as:
- Washing hands regularly
- Wearing a face mask in crowded places
Umrah During Ramadan
Ramadan traditionally marks the peak season of Umrah in the Grand Mosque, Islam’s most sacred place in Mecca. Authorities in Saudi Arabia are making stepped-up preparations to accommodate the expected influx of worshippers.
The current season of Umrah, which can be undertaken year-round, began in late June after the completion of the annual Hajj pilgrimage.
Main Rituals of Umrah
The primary rituals of Umrah include:
- Tawaf: Encircling the Holy Kaaba in the Grand Mosque seven times.
- Sa’i: Walking back and forth between the hills of Safa and Marwah.
Conclusion
Saudi health authorities emphasize the importance of vaccinations and safety measures to protect pilgrims. Ensuring public health remains a top priority during the sacred pilgrimage.
