Fourteen Jordanians and five Iranians have tragically died during the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, with several fatalities attributed to heat stroke. Additionally, 17 Jordanians have been reported missing, as per a statement from the Jordanian foreign ministry on Sunday.

The Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates confirmed that six of the deaths were due to heat stroke while on Mount Arafat. Other sources have reported a higher toll, with 17 names of deceased pilgrims being published.

Iranian Red Crescent chief Pirhossein Koolivand stated that five Iranian pilgrims have lost their lives in Mecca and Medina during this year's Hajj, without specifying the causes of death.

The Saudi health ministry issued an advisory on Thursday, warning pilgrims of the soaring temperatures, which are predicted to reach 47 degrees Celsius (116 Fahrenheit) in Mecca. Pilgrims were advised to stay hydrated and avoid outdoor activities during the hottest hours of the day, between 11 am and 3 pm.

Ambassador Dr. Sufyan Qudah, official spokesman and director of operations and consular affairs department in the Jordanian ministry, stated that they are coordinating closely with Saudi authorities to manage the burial processes and repatriation of the deceased to Jordan for those families who wish to do so. Ambassador Qudah extended deep condolences and sympathy to the bereaved families.

Heat stroke is a severe condition that occurs when the body’s temperature regulation system fails due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures. Symptoms can include fainting, seizures, and even death if not promptly treated. This condition is often exacerbated by dehydration and physical exertion, conditions frequently encountered during the rigorous activities of the Hajj pilgrimage.

Ali Al Daqamseh, media spokesman for the Jordanian Ministry of Awqaf, Islamic Affairs, and Holy Sites, noted that the reported deaths were not part of the official Jordanian mission, indicating they occurred independently of the organized groups.
