Overview of Current Rainfall Conditions
According to Dr. Mansour Almazroui, a climate change expert and member of the Saudi Shoura Council, the current rainy weather conditions, expected to persist until mid-August, closely resemble the significant rainfall experienced in 2016. The severity of these conditions is exacerbated by the formation of a waterspout over the sea, which is a rotating column of air occurring over water, typically appearing as a funnel-shaped cloud connected to the water and a cumuliform cloud.
Factors Contributing to Intense Rainfall
Dr. Almazroui noted that heavy rains are typical for the Jazan region in August. Several factors contribute to this intensity, including:
- The influence of southwest monsoon winds.
- The influx of humidity from the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Sea.
- The extension of the subtropical high-pressure belt.
Call for Comprehensive Studies
Highlighting the recurring nature of these climate phenomena, Dr. Almazroui called upon the National Center of Meteorology to conduct comprehensive studies to better understand these weather patterns. He emphasized the importance of strategic initiatives to raise public awareness about the potential dangers of such weather events, which can sometimes result in fatalities.
Proposed Initiatives
Dr. Almazroui proposed establishing a dedicated weather and climate television channel to improve public preparedness and response. This initiative aims to enhance communication and coordination among all relevant parties by providing critical updates on weather conditions, flood risks, and emergency protocols.
