Food waste in Saudi Arabia is worth over SR400 billion annually, a state food security company has estimated.

The holy region of Mecca has taken the lead in food waste, followed by the Eastern Region and the capital Riyadh, the Saudi Company for Agricultural Investment and Animal Production (SALIC) added on its Twitter account.

Rice tops the list of the squandered food items with 31 per cent, followed by bread with 25 per cent, poultry with 16 per cent, fish with 14.5 per cent and dates with 5.5 per cent, the firm added in a breakdown.

SALIC is owned by the Saudi Public Investment Fund.
