On Wednesday, the National Center of Meteorology (NCM) warned of torrential rain and surface winds in the governorates of Jeddah and Rabigh.
According to the center's weather forecast, moderate to heavy rains, surface winds, hail, and torrential rains will affect the entire governorate, its open areas, and its highways. A lack of visibility will also persist until 10.00 in the morning.
Rabigh governorate was also warned of thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rain by the NCM. Rain will continue until 12 p.m.
Civil Defense officials in the Makkah region and the Saudi General Directorate of Civil Defense urged people to remain vigilant during rain. During rainy weather, it advised staying away from water swamps, avoiding places where torrents gather, and not crossing valleys.
Last Thursday's torrential downpour in Jeddah was the city's highest rainfall ever. The rain lasted for about eight hours – from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. – and amounted to 179.7 millimeters of water, according to NCM’s monitoring stations.
There were two fatalities in the flooding that brought back memories of the devastating floods that struck the city 13 years ago. Rescuers rescued several people trapped inside submerged vehicles. The Jeddah Civil Defense rescued many motorists trapped in the inundated King Abdullah Road tunnel.
Inundation of major arteries and highways disrupted flights and road traffic for several hours. Several streets in Jeddah's residential neighborhoods were flooded, causing many vehicles to breakdown.
