Supreme Court Verdict: Closure On Makkah Haram Crane Crash Case
Category: Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia's Supreme Court has reached its final decision on the Makkah Grand Mosque crane crash case, upholding the Makkah Criminal Court of Appeal's verdict. The Saudi Binladin Group faces SR20 million in fines for negligence and safety violations in the tragic incident that occurred nearly eight years ago, resulting in the loss of 110 lives and injuries to 209 others.

Eight directors, department heads, executives, and engineers have also been convicted, receiving prison sentences and fines. Three engineers and supervisors have been acquitted, and the trial of one defendant has been suspended due to their passing. The court has recommended holding some entities accountable for their negligence.

This decision brings closure to a lengthy legal process that began after the crane accident during the Haram expansion project in 2015. The Supreme Court's ruling emphasizes the finality of the verdict and its binding nature.

The crane crash was initially attributed to downward winds with a speed of 80 km per hour. The court found the Binladin Group guilty of failing to follow safety measures and construction site regulations, including the necessary precautions for crane safety.

After multiple verdicts and appeals, the Supreme Court mandated a reexamination of the case by a new judicial circuit, leading to the recent decision. The Makkah Criminal Court of Appeal issued the final verdict in February 2023, imposing SR20 million in fines on the Binladin Group and various sentences for other defendants.

This verdict marks an important milestone in addressing the tragic incident and promoting safety in construction projects across Saudi Arabia.
