Saudi Arabia
The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has announced that starting July 1, 2025, new food labeling regulations will take effect across the Kingdom. These rules are aimed at increasing transparency and helping consumers make healthier dietary choices when dining out or ordering online.
What the New SFDA Food Regulations Require
Under the new SFDA guidelines, food establishments such as restaurants and cafes must:
- Display a 'saltshaker' icon next to meals high in sodium
- Disclose the caffeine content in beverages
- Indicate the estimated time required to burn off the calories from the meal
These rules apply to both printed menus and digital platforms, including food delivery apps and websites.
Why These Rules Matter for Public Health
The initiative supports national health goals by promoting awareness about sodium and caffeine intake. According to the World Health Organization (WHO):
- Adults should limit sodium to no more than 5 grams of salt per day (one teaspoon).
- Caffeine intake should not exceed 400 mg per day for adults and 200 mg for pregnant women.
Helpful Tools for Restaurants and Consumers
To help ensure compliance and encourage healthier decisions, the SFDA provides the following tools:
- Caffeine Calculator – Helps track caffeine consumption.
- Mwasfah Store – Download the approved technical regulation manual.
