Freezing Temperatures Grip Northern Saudi Arabia
The Turaif governorate in Saudi Arabia’s Northern Borders Region has recorded a historic low of -2°C, marking the coldest temperature ever in the country. According to the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM), the severe cold front continues to impact the northern regions, bringing frost and dense fog.
Cold Wave to Persist as Frost Covers the Region
Meteorologists predict that Turaif’s temperatures could drop even further, reaching between 0°C and -3°C in the coming days. Early Monday morning, residents witnessed frost crystals forming on plants—a rare sight in Saudi Arabia’s desert climate.
Warnings Issued for Frost and Reduced Visibility
Authorities have urged residents in Northern Borders, Al-Jawf, and Hail to take precautionary measures against the extreme cold. Additionally, dense fog is expected to reduce visibility in the southern parts of the Eastern Province, making early morning travel hazardous.
Extreme Weather: Unusual for Saudi Arabia
While Saudi Arabia occasionally experiences cold spells, the current intensity and persistence of sub-zero temperatures are unusual. The NCM attributes this phenomenon to an intense Arctic air mass sweeping through the region.
Stay Safe Amid the Cold
Residents are advised to wear warm clothing, avoid prolonged exposure to cold air, and drive cautiously in foggy conditions. The NCM continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates as necessary.
