Saudi Arabia Prepares The World's Largest Walkway For Pilgrims
Category: Saudi Arabia

The world's longest walkway linking holy sites in Saudi Arabia will be open to pilgrims undertaking the Hajj pilgrimage rites next month, local media reported.

Known as the pedestrians' road, the 25-kilometre facility runs from the Arafat area, where the annual pilgrimage culminates, through Muzdalifah and Mina, around eight kilometres east of Mecca.

During other times of the year, the walkway will also be accessible to the general public.

The route, which is lined with benches on either side, has four tracks and is surrounded by concrete barriers to prevent cars from passing.

A Saudi television station, Al Ekhbariya, reports that the walkway spans five tracks measuring 5,100 metres each, 7,580 metres each, 7,5560 metres each, and 4,620 metres each.

Along the way, LED lampposts are saving energy.

Saudi Arabia has consistently developed facilities over the years to make the Hajj journey comfortable and smooth for pilgrims flocking to the holy sites from across the globe.

Saudi Arabia will allow 1 million pilgrims from inside and outside the kingdom to perform this year's Hajj, after restricting the annual ritual to a few thousand Muslims living within the country for the past two years due to an outbreak of COVID-19.

Before the pandemic, around 2.5 million Muslims from all over the world attended Hajj every year.
