Localising Medical Jobs Across Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia has unveiled a new plan to increase the number of Saudis working in four key health professions in the private sector, as part of efforts to provide job opportunities for citizens.
The Ministry of Human Resources, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, aims to boost Saudisation rates in radiology to 64%, medical laboratories to 70%, therapeutic nutrition to 80%, and physiotherapy to 80%.
Two-Phase Implementation in 2025
The localisation initiative will be rolled out in two phases. The first phase begins on April 17, 2025, covering medical institutions in major cities such as Riyadh, Mecca, Medina, Jeddah, Dammam, and Khobar. Major healthcare facilities in other regions will also be included in this phase.
The second phase will commence 12 months later on October 17, 2025, expanding the localisation efforts to all healthcare institutions across the kingdom.
Support from the Ministry of Human Resources
The Ministry of Health will monitor the implementation to align it with labour market needs and health specialisations, ensuring compliance and a smooth transition.
Private sector institutions that comply with these Saudisation requirements will benefit from incentives provided by the Ministry of Human Resources, including assistance in finding qualified Saudi employees, training support, and access to employment continuity programs.
Expanding Saudisation Across Sectors
Saudi Arabia has implemented several localisation initiatives across multiple sectors such as education, telecommunications, and real estate. The government’s efforts are part of a labour policy known as “Saudisation”, aimed at replacing expatriate workers with Saudi nationals.
In September 2023, authorities announced a plan to localise the dental profession, with a target of 35% localisation starting from March 2024.
